4 dead after car veers off mountain road in rollover crash near Wrightwood

WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Four people were killed and two others injured when a car veered off a mountain road and crashed near Wrightwood.

The crash was reported just before 1:30 a.m. Friday on Highway 2 between Big Pines and Wrightwood, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators say six people were in the 2016 Hyundai Veloster when the driver veered off the road.

"For unknown reasons, the vehicle swerved away from the roadway, struck a telephone pole and rolled down an embankment. At that time, four parties were ejected from the vehicle," CHP Officer Thaniel Ong said.

Two women and two men died in the crash.

The two surviving occupants were airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Officials say none of them were wearing seat belts and that alcohol is likely a contributing factor in the crash.

Relatives of the victims stopped at the crash site several hours later, but most declined to speak to Eyewitness News. One woman said off-camera that her nephew was one of the victims who died.

She said he was with a group of friends driving around, adding that they were all in their 20s.

The CHP said all six people involved in the crash are from Wrightwood.

Authorities have not officially identified any of the victims.
